2008 Airline of the Year Survey Winners Awarded
Ranking first in all of the five survey categories, Southwest Airlines Cargo took home the coveted XLA Airline of the Year Award for the fifth year in a row. American Airlines Cargo and Continental Airlines Cargo tied for the second place domestic Airline of the Year Award while Northwest Airlines Cargo took home the International Airline of the Year award.
The XLA Airline of the Year Awards are based on an annual survey of association members who use the services of carriers for their express deliveries around the world. Airlines were rated in the categories of Communication, Service, Technology and Value, combined with Department of Transportation on-time performance data. Only airlines that were members of XLA in 2008 were included in the survey, which included Alaska Airlines, American Airlines Cargo, Continental Airlines Cargo, Delta Cargo, Continental Airlines Cargo, Northwest Airlines Cargo, United Airlines Cargo and U.S. Airways.
Matt Groppe, chairman of the XLA Airline Liaison Committee presented the awards to the airlines at the XLA Annual Meeting in Las Vegas on Monday, March 9, 2009. Groppe congratulated each of the winners before presenting the awards.
Accepting the Airline of the Year Award on behalf of Southwest Airlines Cargo was Wally Devereaux, Director of Sales & Marketing, Matt Buckley, Senior Director of Cargo, and Jay Hollinsworth, Director of Cargo Operations.
“Southwest Airlines’ reliable schedule and outstanding Customer Service have differentiated us from our competitors,” said Matt Buckley, Southwest’s Senior Director of Cargo. “We appreciate the hard work and dedication of our Cargo and Ramp Employees who go above and beyond to meet the needs of our Customers. We owe this award to them.”
American Airlines Cargo was honored to be one of the recipients of the second place domestic Airline of the Year Award. Dave Brooks, President/Cargo, Roger Samways, Managing Director Global Accounts & Sales Strategy and Jennifer Pemberton, Manager Advertising/Public Relations accepted the award.
Continental Airlines Cargo was pleased to have tied with American Airlines Cargo for the second place domestic Airline of the Year Award considering that American Airlines has been named the second place winner for three consecutive years. Accepting the award for Continental Airlines Cargo wasJim Bellinder, Director of Sales-The Americas, Lisa Schoppa, Manager-Quickpak Product Development, Tony Randgaard, Manager Cargo Marketing, Kaci Suarez, QUICKPAK Sales Manager, Jim McKeon, Managing Director Global Cargo Sales Marketing and Kevin Adderson, Regional Sales Manger Western USA & Canada Cargo.
John Kempe, General Manager, North American Sales for Delta Cargo accepted the International Airline of the Year Award on behalf of Northwest Airlines Cargo. John Kempe was the General Manager, North American Sales for Northwest Airlines Cargo prior to the merger of the two airlines.
The annual survey of members not only reveals the winners of the Airline of the Year Awards, it also provides important information that is shared with the individual airlines. With a 48% increase in survey responses over last year, the 2008 Airline of the Year survey captured both metric results as well as anecdotal comments.

XLA's official position on Airline antitrust class-action lawsuit settlement participation is that the association is not involved in assisting any firm with their solicitions of XLA members. We will not provide a member list, or accept advertising from any company soliciting XLA members for business.
FRAUD WARNINGS
We have had reports of individuals receiving solicitations for pre-payment of freight charges using versions of our name and logo (below). Some represent themselves as agents of Microsoft. These solicitations are fraudulent, and XLA is in no way affiliated with this fraud. Please report any emails using this ruse directly to jenniferc@robstan.com.
